Walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx
Leave the castle on the Cleveland Way and let the Rye valley reveal one of the area’s strongest pairings: town and abbey.
The relationship between Helmsley and Rievaulx is one of the easiest ways to understand this part of Yorkshire. The town gives you the starting point; the valley and abbey give the walk a destination with real weight.
Start at the castle
English Heritage’s route leaves from Helmsley Castle and joins the Cleveland Way. The path moves through fields and woodland before descending toward the Rye valley.
Let the abbey be the destination
Rievaulx Abbey is not just a landmark at the end of the walk. The ruins, museum and setting make it worth giving the destination proper time.
Change the perspective
If you have enough energy and time, Rievaulx Terrace adds a designed landscape above the valley and views back toward the abbey.
This route includes historic paths, steps and mixed surfaces. Check current route information and weather before walking, and plan how you will return if you are not doing a circular version.
