A first day in Grassington

Grassington is compact enough to understand on foot, but the village makes more sense when you connect the square to the river and the wider story of Upper Wharfedale.

Begin with the village itself

Take some time around the cobbled square and the ginnels that run between the stone buildings. Grassington is a practical base as much as a pretty one, with independent shops, cafés and pubs concentrated close together.

Add the local story

Grassington Folk Museum sits directly on the square and brings together mining, farming, domestic life, crafts and the former Yorkshire Dales Railway. It is a useful stop before heading into the landscape because many of the things you see outside have a local history behind them.

Follow the village toward the river

The National Park recommends walking down toward Linton Falls from the Grassington Visitor Centre. If you want something easy, its Miles Without Stiles route is a short riverside option; for more distance, Grass Wood continues the day through woodland and along the Wharfe.

Finish somewhere warm

Back in Grassington, The Foresters Arms gives you a straightforward pub option. If your day carries on toward Linton, the Fountaine Inn gives the route a natural village finish.
